A warm and comforting Asian classic, this ABC soup is deep in umami flavor and the perfect dish on a cold day
What is ABC soup?
You may be wondering why this is called ABC soup, and no it isn’t the alphabet pasta soup. The ABC in the name represents the nutritious nature of the soup, each letter standing for the vitamins A, B, and C.
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, potatoes are rich in vitamin B and tomatoes are rich in vitamin C. The vegetables are boiled over low heat for several hours for them to come together and form a delicious, nutritious soup.
The soup can be cooked with just those vegetables, but it is typically boiled with a protein like chicken or pork ribs and other vegetables like onions and corn.
This soup is very popular throughout South-East Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Singapore, and China. The flavor is clean and savoury with a slight sweetness from the vegetables. It’s perfect on a cold day, or just to replenish your body with those much-needed vitamins.

Ingredients
- Water: Water makes up the body of the soup! Make sure you have enough water in your pot that the ingredients are covered.
- Whole chicken: Make sure you use a whole chicken for the best flavor. Fresh whole chicken from the grocery store is perfect, otherwise you can also use a “boiling chicken”, a chicken specifically for soup, if you like
- Corn: Use one whole corn cob and cut it up into sections
- Onion: Peel the onion and cut it in half, don’t cut off the butt of the onion as this holds the onion together and prevents it from falling apart in the soup
- Potato: Potato adds nutrition to the soup! It doesn’t add much flavor, but it helps to bulk up the soup.

- Tomatoes: Tomatoes add a delicious umami flavor to the soup while also giving the soup some color
- Red dates: Dates add a little sweetness to the soup, as well as adding numerous health benefits
- Chicken powder: Chicken powder helps to give the soup a boost of flavor and elevates the chicken flavor cooked into the dish
- YumYum: YumYum is my special blend of MSG made to enhance the flavor of any dish. If you don’t have any you can purchase it here, or replace it with MSG
- Salt: Salt is essential to the soup, the seasoning helps bring out all those flavors that were boiled. Feel free to adjust the amount of seasoning as required.
How to cook ABC soup

Making ABC soup is as easy as ABC. Simply place the vegetables in the pot with your chicken and fill it to the top with water. Make sure there is enough water to cover your ingredients.
Bring the water to a rolling boil and skim off any skum from the top. This helps to give your soup a cleaner flavor and color. Then bring the heat down to low and simmer for 5 hours.
